Another exciting weekend in the Premier League! Some surprising results, never-ending title race, and Arsenal winning against direct Champions League place rival!
There’s hardly ever a weekend in Premier League without a top-of-the-table encounter. This weekend was reserved for Arsenal hosting Manchester United!
The match saw the sides coming after completely different fortunes from respective international games in France during the week.
United completed one of the most inspiring comebacks in international football! True, the opposition, PSG, is used to equally dramatic eliminations but that can’t take anything from Solskjaer and his team.
Missing 10 players for various reasons, creating absolutely nothing in terms of a goal threat but still scoring 3 goals and progressing; I’m telling you, it champions stuff!
Arsenal played a French mid-table team with a miserable +3 goal difference in the domestic league, took an early lead and still managed to lose. Arsenal stuff!
However, yesterday something went horribly wrong!
United played some decent football, created a few clear-cut chances, hit the crossbar and the post but lost due to a calamitous error from De Gea. World upside down!
Don’t get me wrong! Regardless of the conceded goal, De Gea is still one of the best shot-stoppers in the world and I’m a huge fan!
Whatever he was thinking about when the ball was coming towards the goal surely was more important than the match! Anyway, if there’s anybody in United’s team who can afford an afternoon off, it’s David.
Emery can be happy with the result, the clean sheet and… little else! He did control well the proceedings once United put in 4 attackers in search for another miracle.
Actually, the visitors were more dangerous before packing the field with strikers and leaving an enormous hole in the middle of the park.
Karma caught up with both of them. Good and bad!
United suffered first meaningfull defeat under Solskjaer. Can’t wait to see teams reaction.
Premier League title race
Nothing new in the title race. Both Manchester City and Liverpool won corresponding home matches.
On paper, the Reds had an easier task on their hand. Burnley is just above the relegation zone and hardly a fair fight.
Watford is flying high in 8th position and should provide a greater challenge. Yet, no surprises came up.
Except for Burnley’s opening goal. Directly from a corner kick! Naturally, the goal had to be disallowed as there was a clear foul on Alison. However, the goal was given and Westwood will have the opportunity to tell the story to his grand-kids.
To make Champions League place fight more nail-biting, Tottenham and Chelsea didn’t win.
The Spurs had an insidious fixture down South against relegation-battlers Southampton. Despite the lead, Pochettino’s men couldn’t hold on and succumbed to 9th Premier League defeat. 9th!
They are still holding on the third place, however, losing almost 30% of matches potentially means losing another 8 points in the last 8 games. Given contenders’ form, it might be too much to retain the position.
Chelsea, on the other hand, hosted Wolverhampton who’s
Needing Hazard’s magic to win a vital point after dominating the game and allowing the opposition a single shot on target, the Blues must feel some regret.
However, they still have a game in hand compared to adversaries and those 3 points would additionally complicate the situation.
Tottenham giving away cheap points, Manchester United running out of luck, Arsenal playing for results instead of “dying in beauty” and Chelsea capable of anything; heart-attack end of the season awaits us!
Premier League salvation race
Newcastle served its fans with a memorable win overturning a double deficit against Everton. Ayoze Perez assisted one and scored the other two for an immensely important victory!
Cardiff City got the last life-line winning against West Ham while for Fulham and Huddersfield hope is long gone and only prestige games are left before returning to the Championship.
Virtually for half of Premier League club’s the season is pretty much over and no real targets are in front of them.
But the other half will glue us to the screens and seats in
